Putin Should Be Tried for Genocide in Chechnya (corrected version)

A typical soviet argument: when facing inconvenient facts,the theme is quickly switched to the USA. Defending Putin's actions is impossible, so switch the theme to Bush and Iraq. That is a different situation altogether (the USA do not claim the territory of Iraq and genocide is performed by terrorists, which the peacemongersd have never heard of) but the inconvenient theme -Putin's actions - has been avoided. But Putin's regime is not limited to fighting in Caucasus. Critics of the regime are killed, in Russia as well as outside. Switching the theme is impossible here, as the Americans do not kill political opposition and even liars like Michael Moore. And I have not heard of confiscations of large businesses in the USA just because the govenment did not like their owners. Again,impossible to switch the theme to the USA.

Putin is not an angel, of course. What about Bush, for Iraq. There are many such claims in the world too, also in Germany.

I suggest that the argument would benefit from at least a de minimis attempt to check the intellectual pedigree and reliability of sources on which it relies. The gentleman who gives his learned and nuanced opinion on international criminal justice could also improve his thinking by even the most minuscule research on the issue: amongst other surprising things he would learn that the International Criminal Court does not have ratione temporis et personae jurisdiction over the events in Chechnya, while it does over those in Sudan, therefore the criticism confuses (at best) apples and oranges. Europe will never suggest putting Puting on trial. It's all about geo-politics. 'We' can't afford it; we depend on Russians in energy, for example. Let's take European Parliament : all debates concerning Chechnya are very short and formal, and Baltic State Members are the only ones expressing themselves.

everyone knows what the right solution for those problems would be.. it's not like they are completely stupid :) it's just that no one in none of the governements want these confilicts to be solved.. they need these conflicts that will last and last and last.. that's how some people get alot of money selling AK-17 to both sides.. and it's not just about Chechna.. the same goes for Iraq and Africa.. those conflicts could be solved.. but they never will..

Whilst knowing Kremlin's working methods Paul should look behind his back in Vienna more often now. Chechen freedom fighter was lately shot in broad daylight in Vienna, and London "tea drinking and sushi eating party" was a rather murky affair as well...

To do justice, "Should" ought to be replaced with "Must" and the West should stop flirting with the idea of Mother Russia, like the British are accustomed to do.
