I would however disagree that 1) cold war cannot come back, 2) Putin has dropped totalitarian rule. Cold war may come back as soon as the Kremlin feels confident enough. As far as the sham democracy, totalitarianism is not built overnight. The society in todays Russia is even closer to totalitarianism than the USSR in the last couple of years, when totalitarianism was just a formality, with the society ready to try something new; the August coup only helped to speed up the process. A Polish-Scandinavian-Baltic alliance if not supported by the west will not impress the Kremlin even for a minute. Sooner or later you guys will need to take sides.

nobody discusses it because there is nothing to discuss. Conspiracy theorists can get together and discuss their fantasies by themselves. The hard facts have been discussed at least twice, during the investigation and in the Popular Mechanics issue on 11/09 myths. The investigation reports are available for the public and anyone interested can find and download them in five minutes. btw the smartest conspiracy theorists (like those from the oilempire.us web site) do not support primitive lies often repeated in this country, they would even say those primitive liars are agents of Bush and Rumsfeld, pefrorming a covert op to discredit the conspiracy theorists by spreading obvious rubbish. The new world order was a concept that existed after 1991; it never went further than a concept and was never implemented. 11/09 just made our folks waker up and realise they live on the same sinful earth as others; for some people, it was a shock.

First, Russia is not a neighbor to Poland, they have Byelorussia in between, which is independent at least by now. Second, if Russia decides to take over Poland, all talk about "respect" is useless, how can we respect a foe? Third, Russia should practise what it preaches, you cannot preach respect and peace to others and have disrespect and hate to them. There is no such thing as unilaterally good relations, they can only be bilaterally good or bilaterally hostile. And one more thing. The history shows that no aggressor, even a strategic genius like Napoleon or the German general staff, can go against united Europe. Thats why we need to be united, and thats why Russia tries to split us.

Why doesnt anybody discuss how September 11 is a fabricated pretext for Americas bold move (and not exactly transparent) to establish a new world order?

Edward the problem with your analysis - is that you failed to put on the kremlin's shoes & see matters from their perspective. then you would be able to subscribe a better way forward for them & for poland. Instead you entrench yourself in a them & us scenario. in reality partnerships are temporary. it's not black & white it's grey. if Poland respects all it's neighbours (inc Russia) it will prosper & they will prosper. If not someone else will benefit.

Thank you, Edward Lucas, also for the clear words that you spoke to the Latvian nation and its political elite in your recent "Diena" interview! Let us hope that the Latvians and the Europeans will wake up and not allow Schröderization and Kalvitization to progress further. We are indeed strong, if only we stand together unified and self-confident.

Thank you for being a good friend to the Baltics and other Eastern Europeans, like so many of you, Brittish people, are. You're right that we have to work on our own to form alternative alliances, NATO may not suffice.
thank you!

This security partnership is the only and best way for Nordic and Baltic nations to proceed.

kamēr jaunais aukstais karš iet pilnā sparā, Latvijas politiskā elite spēlē hokeju... stulbie pāķi...
