Let me know

Thanks again for your feedback on Hedgehog and disability issues. I will return to this in future blogs as the Embassy works on ideas for how we can contribute. In the meantime, do let me have any further suggestions for giving this important issue more profile here in Latvia and any thoughts about what more I can do.

And don't forget to check out the “Leonard Cheshire” website....Some background about what I do. I have been in Riga since summer 07. I love it. Friendly people, nice city and lots of space for practising marathon running. I enjoy the work, which covers EU issues, energy security, climate change, oversight of consular and visa issues, defence cooperation and promoting UK business in Latvia. At the moment, top priority is the financial crisis: the London Summit in early April can help, and I will have more to say on this blog nearer the time.Plus I do everything I can to stimulate interest here in the UK about our respective countries, meeting lots of people and making sure I am well-informed and accessible. I work with a super team in the embassy, and with my good friends and colleagues in the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia (BCCL) and the British Council. The BCCL website has a wealth of embarrassing photos of me delivering speeches and most recently trying to master the art of Scottish dancing. (It is a compulsory art form for every British Ambassador.) Nearly all UK diplomatic missions in the world participate in the celebration of the Burns Night in January dedicated to Scotland and Scottish traditions. In Riga, it is an annual charity event brilliantly organised by BCCL and reflecting the great talent the Scots have for business among other things. And 2009 is a special year, the first “Year of Homecoming” for Scotland, too. I hope to demonstrate over the next few months that the Embassy is really conscious of Latvia's issues (many of which are shared concerns with the UK) and works hard to build close co-operation. Coming up next week I have an important trade promotion event in the Embassy, which will demonstrate UK business is committed to the Baltic market. And I hope to get an experienced team from the South Wales police to discuss tourism issues with the Latvian authorities (80 000 British tourists come to Latvia every year). If you have ideas about the priority issues for you, let me know. In particular, I need your ideas on exploring Latvia so that I don’t spend all my time in Riga. If there is an interesting project or event in your district, don’t be shy.
