As always I know I have the full support of the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, which is hosting a dinner for us all on 19 February. The people visiting Riga have first-hand dealings with British companies that are looking to export from the UK. These trade advisers are based in 12 regional trade promotion offices around Britain. They are the clients' first point of contact when working out the potential export strategies and attracting British companies interest to different markets overseas. So they are the vital link in the relationship. This week’s meeting is recognition that trade between the UK and Baltics depends crucially on making sure the right people in the UK understand the Latvian and Baltic markets. We know the times are very tough. Therefore it is even more important to be creative, to have available excellent market analysis so as to be able to work out where the export opportunities lie. The way out of these economic hard times for the UK is to look for export opportunities and demonstrate that trade promotion is an effective part of economic recovery. I remain convinced that the Baltic region offers excellent opportunities. Strong trade links underpin the strength of our relationship. So we also support commercial work going the opposite direction: export growth is a key to Latvia’s economic recovery. The UK provides an excellent market for Latvian products. The Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIDA) is working hard in the UK on your behalf. There is too much talk about protectionism or de-globalisation. We all know that would be seriously damaging to economic recovery, particularly for liberal, open economies such as the UK and Latvia. So we have to keep going with trade. If anyone out there has any thoughts about the potential, niche markets and key messages to put to these senior UK trade officials, let me know. I like to be in touch with the market, and want to be able to reflect your views when I talk to the UK trade advisers this week. Remember, don’t be shy.
The way out is to look for export opportunities
On 18 and 20 February this week I am getting together with 15 people from across all the UK to meet the Baltic trade teams operating from the British Embassies in the region. It is a great opportunity to plan for the future and decide how to strengthen the real business part of the relationship. I am delighting to be hosting this trade promotion event in Riga along with my good friends from Vilnius and Tallinn.
