TEHRAN - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei visited Assembly of Experts Chairman Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani in a hospital in Tehran on Sunday. Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani has been hospitalized due to a heart attack since June. After being taken to the hospital, he fell into a coma. On June 5, the Supreme Leader visited Mahdavi Kani in Tehran’s Bahman Hospital and also some Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, head of the Supreme Leader's office Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, advisor to the Supreme Leader Ali Akbar Nategh-Nouri, Iranian Armed Forces Commander Ataollah Salehi visited Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani on the same day.

Zarif discussed developments in Iraq and threats posed to the region with the grand ayatollah, the Iranian Foreign Ministry media department reported. The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Baghdad on Sunday to hold talks with the Iraqi officials. Zarif met with some Iraqi officials such as Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq chief Ammar al-Hakim in Baghdad on Sunday. On Monday, Zarif also met with other religious authorities in Najaf. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Zarif said Tehran attaches great importance to security, national unity and territorial integrity in Iraq. The chief Iranian diplomat also called for a speedy formation of inclusive government in Iraq. The Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to make a trip to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday to hold talks with Kurdistan Regional Government President Masoud Barzani and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan head Jalal Talabani. Iraq is in a very complicated security situation as it is caught in a fierce fight with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) whose militants are crueler than any other terrorist organization.
