My oldest dgtahuer caught on at about the age of six, when she noticed that Santa Claus had used the same wrapping paper for gifts that Mom did She must have alerted her younger siblings as the years went by, because I don't remember any intense questioning, or any trauma when it was revealed that the gifts actually came from recognizably human friends and relatives. Unfortunately my youngest caused a near riot in his kindergarten class when he told one of the girls that there was no such person as Santa Claus I don't think little Kelsey spoke to him for the rest of the year.
