Your not the only one, Honey! Just because you've managed to get a column doesn't make you Superman. There are hundreds of Latvians living outside of Latvia (due to the Allies selling LV to Stalin at Yalta) that have funded an orphanage, group home and individual for many more years than you! So before you start patting yourself and co. on the back find out more what's up and maybe you'll see that you've got a long way to go, Baby!

im just tred of two-faced political hypocrites. Its always nice and politically advantageous to kiss a baby, but one needs to have the historic memory of a Russian with Korsakoff's syndrome not to see discrepancies in politicians spoken words.

Sweetie, your question fits quite well in the chapter 'external policy', not 'charity' or 'children'. Or is it full moon again?

I think "think globally, act locally" is the message. I still am not convinced your country, the US or Belgium will come to the aid of Latvia in case of a Russian invasion. Your response will be reminiscent of Russias attack on Georgia. It will be over before you get your ass out of your chair. US forces were 750 miles away in Iraq and they didnt do anything. What are you going to do???

Working with children and for children is a great thing. Only sad that government of Latvia does not understand this cutting teachers little wages more and more. This is very short minded and unperspective politics here in Latvia. I know in UK teacher's profession is respected from every one.

Cool that you do it! And I also believe that it can be veru giving not only for the kids bout also for all involved. Somehow people feel much better when helping others. And Latvia at the moment is so low, that any cheerfulness and help is appreciated. Keep busy that way! :)

Try and live with it. You haven't been granted the right to speak for me and everyone else, if I recall it correctly, so there'll be a place for my thoughts. Work on Fridays is the lot of a labour horse.

These types of events always fascinate and surprise me at how they benefit both- the giver and receiver to the point where you're having trouble defining who was really the giver and who was the receiver. I've been pleasantly surprised by the current activities of the British and Canadian Embassy's for how they've managed to breach the societal barriers and bravely engage with people from all social standings- no matter the title, age, level of income or nationality. There is something special about this- it's a movement that unites and gives hope. This also provides some food for thought and reflection on what qualities a great leader should possess, is this something we see in our political elite and do we practice it ourselves as leader either in our homes, workplaces or communities?

Thank you indeed for the nice things you're doing! Some of those kids are, indeed, children of the world: they have just us to take care of them. Suggestion for one of your next blog columns (if I may): Latvia, unfortunately, has many orphelins, and they're live orphelin houses and go to special schools. Not really a natural environment for a kid to grow in. In many European countries, institutions like that, do not exist anymore as there are other solutions, like placement in a family. So, how about UK? How do you deal with abandoned kids? (Especially in the context of adolescent pregnacies :)

When it comes to a writer like you, I'd expect you to avoid using essentially meaningless or ambiguous phrases such as "children of this world". But the general message is fine. Except that many of us think the British Embassy occasionally places the wrong emphasis on certain activities. Peace!
